Asking Powerful, Open Questions

Why Great Questions Lead to Great Answers

Great conversations start with great questions. Open-ended questions unlock new possibilities and inspire reflection, making them essential for coaches, leaders, and anyone seeking meaningful dialogue.

What Makes a Question “Powerful”? Powerful questions are open-ended, focused on curiosity, and invite exploration. They encourage others to think deeply and arrive at their own insights.

Practical Tips for Asking Better Questions:

  1. Start with “What” or “How”: These questions expand the conversation. For instance, “What options have you considered?” or "What else might you try?"

  2. Reframe “Why”: Instead of “Why did you do that?” try “What led to your decision?” to avoid defensiveness.

  3. Follow Up: Stay curious. Questions like “Tell me more” keep the dialogue flowing.

Oh, and another thing: In hierarchical cultures, direct questioning may feel uncomfortable. Soften your approach with phrases like, “I’m curious to hear your thoughts on…” or, "help me understand about..."

How do you do this?: Write down three closed questions you often ask. Practice turning them into open-ended ones and use them in your next conversation.

When you ask better questions, you empower others to find their own answers—and that’s a powerful gift.
