How to put 360 (very) odd days into a short article? "Chunk it" says my inner editor... So here goes: A book, a song, a lesson, a decision, a quote, a new tradition and a new habit
A song for 2020? Well Spotify has the insight into what I played the most. Beyond quantity is quality, and piano blues and jazz, provided the soundtrack to the year
A book? Mindset: The new Psychology of Success by Carol Dweck - what a great read to spark the reflection of how we contribute to what holds us back... and what we can do to change.
A lesson? To many to boil it down to just one. But a few stand out
I remembered that I love learning, that learning in groups is more fun than by yourself.
I was reminded how much good and love there is in the world. (the quote from the John Carpenter movie "Starman" sums 2020 quite adroitly. The alien map maker (Jeff Bridges) says "Shall I tell you what I find beautiful about you? You are at your very best when things are worst."). And how much support and care there is to be found in my feed on this site
That listening attentively to the person speaking with is one of the greatest gifts we have to offer. From the taxi driver, to the new parent stuck at home with a 3 month old child, from the new manager struggling to make the target (set before January 30) to the newly retrenched colleague wondering how they'll cope.
I need nature - to be out in the fresh air with the sun on my face and the wind in my hair.
(Context note - I live in Singapore just 80km from the equator) I like to run in the rain...
A new habit developed in 2020 is one of mindfulness: taking the time to walk, breathe, eat and sit
in the moment
And traditions? Many have ceased or been put on hold but new ones have been recalled and replaced them: Movie night with the kids; Sandwich Sundays; and games night
What about your songs, habits and lessons? Tell me how your 2020 has been.
