Tuning into Others’ Energy and Words

Empathy builds trust and connection, while mirroring strengthens rapport. Together, they form the backbone of impactful communication.

What Is Empathy? Empathy is the ability to understand and share another’s feelings.

It creates a safe space for honest dialogue.

What Is Mirroring? Mirroring involves reflecting someone’s tone, energy, and words to show understanding.

Practical Tips for Empathy and Mirroring:

  1. Validate Feelings: Say, “That sounds frustrating” to acknowledge emotions.

  2. Match Energy: If someone is quiet and reflective, mirror that tone.

  3. Reflect Words: Paraphrase their statements to confirm understanding.

Please note: Over-mirroring can feel insincere in some cultures. Balance attentiveness with authenticity (use your language AND the client's if that feels right).

Putting this into practice: In your next conversation, match the other person’s tone and observe how it impacts the connection.

Empathy and mirroring show people they’re seen and heard, fostering deeper trust
