Choosing a coach isn’t a casual decision—it’s an investment in yourself. The right coach will push you, align with your values, and challenge you to exceed your expectations
So how do you choose a coach? It's a question I get asked a lot both as a coach and as a coaching program designer. Here are some elements to consider both as reflection questions for you ask your self and practical steps to take to aid your search. What would you add to this?
Clarify Your Goals
Practical Step: List what you’re looking to achieve—whether it’s boosting leadership skills, building confidence, or navigating a career change.
Reflection Question: How clear are you about where you want to go, or is that what you need the most help defining?
Assess the Coach’s Experience
Practical Step: Look for coaches with a track record in the areas that matter most to you—leadership, performance, resilience, etc. Don’t just rely on their website; ask for specifics.
Reflection Question: Is the coach experienced enough to help with the challenges unique to your role or career stage?
Check Their Coaching Style
Practical Step: Ask about their coaching approach. Some coaches challenge forcefully, while others guide more softly. Knowing your preference and tolerance can help.
Reflection Question: Do you want a coach who holds you accountable or someone who gives you more space to explore?
Prioritize Cultural Fit
Practical Step: Think about whether the coach respects and understands your cultural context. It’s not just about language or region—it’s about values and perspectives.
Pros and Cons: A good cultural fit often helps build trust faster, but stretching outside your norm can provide valuable new perspectives
Review Credentials and Testimonials
Practical Step: Look beyond the certification. Get in touch with past clients to hear what they appreciated (and what they didn’t). Authentic feedback can reveal more than a CV.
Reflection Question: What do others say about the coaches approach—does it align with your goals or challenge you to grow?
Observe Chemistry in a Discovery Session
Practical Step: Schedule a 15-30 minute discovery call. Notice if you feel understood, supported, and challenged. Chemistry isn’t just about ‘liking’ someone—it’s about trust.
Reflection Question: Did you leave the call feeling inspired and heard, or was something holding you back from full trust?
Evaluate Their Growth Mindset
Practical Step: Ask about their own journey. A coach who continuously grows and evolves can offer more relevant insights.
Reflection Question: Are they practicing what they preach? Are they embodying the values and growth mindset you want to cultivate?
Measure Their Impact on Others
Practical Step: Look for evidence of change. Ask the coach about a recent breakthrough or lasting impact they’ve helped a client achieve.
Reflection Question: How willing are they to be specific about when they’ve helped people like you grow? Or are their stories vague and general?
