Behavioral Scientist BJ Fogg in his book Tiny Habits writes of the three conditions that need to be met for behavior change to take place. The equation is B = MAP

Capability and

Prompt


Motivation

In motivation you explore the drivers of the individual(s). Fogg details the elements of motivation

  • Sensation: The pursuit of pleasure and the avoidance of pain

  • Anticipation: IF sensation is physical, sensation is the emotional face of motivation revolving around fear and hope

  • Belonging: We are gregarious creatures by nature and our sense of acceptance and status are powerful motivators...



Capability

Centers on: knowing what to do; finding the new behavior simple or straightforward to perform (including not going too much against accepted norms) ; time efficient and; easy to work into your existing routine


Prompt

Focuses on how to build in triggers into your environment that act as reminders to perform the new behavior

  • Sparks help those with high ability and low motivation

  • Signals for those with high ability and high motivation and

  • Facilitators work best for high motivation and low ability


So when behavior change is needed - at how or at work, which element is missing? and how might you use the above to diagnose and affect the situation?
