The best things I learned in training: Recognition

I've run dozens of courses webinars and other workshops on recognition and in all that time no one has ever said they get too much recognition. Recognition can be fast, deeply motivating to those receiving it and instructive to you and the people around you. So how to do?

First you need to let them know what you think they did well... so Describe the behavior

When you do, make sure you are specific and concise. Sometimes you will recognize effort or progress other times you will recognize the result. Make sure they understand which it is

You also want to personalize recognition so express your appreciation and highlight the impact what they do has on others. You could focus on the positive outcomes experienced by clients or colleagues or even give specific examples people have benefited.

And finally make sure to ask a few questions to learn more about how they had the idea, how they implemented it and what they learned in the process- you might just learn something yourself!

To summarize

  • Describe the behaviour

  • Express appreciation & describe the impact

  • Ask a few questions

Here's an example:

"Hey Bipin, I wanted to talk with you about the recruiting process you 've put together. It's very impressive; It has saved time for stakeholders, improved the candidate experience and allowed better oversight for the HR team. You made a lot of people happier and more productive. What gave you the idea in the first place?... What did you learn that you'll use going forward?"
